First you need to know yourself pretty well. Understand your strengths and weaknesses and love yourself. When you know yourself very well, it gives you the impression that you can stand the outcome of the approach (because some people can behave extra harsh sometimes. If you don't know yourself then you don't know how to keep yourself happy. And by not knowing how to keep yourself happy - you become too dependant on someone else to do it and/ or you fall for people who make you miserable or disappoint you all the time.
2. Find someone that you find really attractive:
Once you find someone that you feel like can make you happy - you maintain a solid relationship by learning everything you can about the person. Learn about how he/she react when they are happy, when they are sad, when they are angry when they are dissapointed, when they are frustrated... all that and never be ignorant of these points. Learn what makes them that way and how to avoid it if it bothers them, cope with it when they need you, and enhance it when they are feeling good. That makes you a good lover and shows that you are building a true love based relationship.

3. Do not be selfish:
Selfishness can cause a great harm to your relationship so try as much as possible to avoid this.
How do you learn to cope when things are rocky?(so as not become selfish) If you pay enough attention to the things that upset you and the things that upset the other person - then you also know what to do and what not to do when things are rocky. Learn to forgive and move forward? People make mistakes and none is perfect. But if you love someone enough - you will forgive them eventually.This shows that you care about the other person.
